The Extradition Act 1989 (Cap. 33) of the United Kingdom was adopted on 27 July 1989.
This Act consolidates enactments relating to extradition under the Criminal Justice Act 1988, the Fugitive Offenders Act 1967 and the Extradition Acts 1870 to 1935, with amendments to give effect to recommendations of the Law Commission and the Scottish Law Commission.
This Act provides for extradition to designated Commonwealth countries and foreign states with which the United Kingdom has an extradition arragement. The Act also permits the making of special extradition arrangements in respect of a particular person and ensures that the United Kingdom can fulfil extradition abligations arising under listed multilateral Conventions where there is no general extradition arrangement between the UK and another state party to the relevant Convention.
The Extradition Act 2003 reforms the 1989 Act on extradition and makes provision for new extradition procedures.
