Established as an independent prosecution service under the Director of Public Prosecutions Act 1983, the Office of the Commonwealth Director of Public Prosecutions (CDPP) is responsible for prosecuting offences against Commonwealth law and recovering the proceeds of crime pursuant to the Proceeds of Crime Act 2002. The CDPP is distinguished from its state counterparts in that it prosecutes a more limited range of Commonwealth offences, rather than the 'street crime' dealt with by the states. Its Commercial, International and Counter-Terrorism Branch works with the Australian Central Authority in international cases.
