The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China (hereinafter Hong Kong, China - 'HKSAR' may maintain international relations and participate in international organizations under the name 'Hong Kong, China') provides a well-developed system for international cooperation to recover the laundered proceeds of the crime of corruption.
Hong Kong, China renders mutual legal assistance in criminal matters either on a treaty (agreement) or a non-treaty basis. Hong Kong, China has bilateral agreements concerning mutual legal assistance in criminal matters in force with 18 jurisdictions. Mutual legal assistance and the recovery of criminal proceeds, including proceeds of corruption, is rendered in accordance with the Mutual Legal Assistance in Criminal Matters Ordinance (Cap. 525) (MLACMO). All major forms of assistance are available, including MLA in relation to proceeds of crime and enforcement of foreign confiscation orders through direct registration.
