The Federal Act on International Mutual Assistance in Criminal Matters (IMAC) was adopted on 20 March 1981 (status as of 5 September 2006). The IMAC is complemented by the Ordinance of 24 February 1982 on International Mutual Assistance in Criminal Matters (O-IMAC).

Provided that international agreements do not provide otherwise, this Act shall govern all procedures of international cooperation in criminal matters, especially:

  • the extradition of persons who are the subjects of criminal prosecution or convicted
  • assistance aimed at supporting criminal proceedings abroad
  • the transfer of proceedings and punishment of offences
  • the execution of foreign criminal judgment.
