Bank of Uganda

The Bank of Uganda was established in 1966 under Article 162 (2) of the Uganda Constitution (amended 1995).

The Bank of Uganda has the Vision of a monetary institution which upholds international best practice in fostering price stability and a sound financial system conducive to macro-economic stability, and broad based economic growth.

The Bank's activities according to the mandate of the Bank of Uganda Act, 1969 are:

  • Issue Uganda's national currency/legal tender, the Uganda Shilling (UGX); 
  • Regulation money supply using monetary policy;
  • Banker to the Government of Uganda;
  • Banker to Commercial Banks;
  • Supervision and regulation of Financial Institutions;
  • Management of the country's external/foreign reserves;
  • Management of Uganda's external debt; and
  • Advise Government on financial and economic issues.
