The Australian Customs Service is charged with protecting Australia against the illegal influx of goods and people. Much of Customs' work concerns the interception of illegal drug and firearms destined for the Australian market, however, it also works on issues related to trade and maintains close relationships with other Australian law enforcement agencies.
Customs is responsible for collecting reports of significant cash movements in and out of Australia and forwarding those reports to AUSTRAC. Customs together with the Australian Federal Police has responsibility for investigating offences that relate to the failure to report these cash movements.
