This Law was originally passed as the Misuse of Drugs (International Co-operation) Law to give legal effect within the Islands to the UN Convention against Illicit Traffic of Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances ('the 1988 Vienna Convention'). It has since been reviewed and re-enacted to provide measures in respect of the investigation, prosecution and confiscation of the proceeds of all serious crimes. International assistance can be given to all member states of the 1988 Vienna Convention, not only in respect of drug trafficking but in respect of all serious crimes, including official corruption and other types of transnational crime.
Under this Law, the Attorney General is the Central Authority and is authorized to seek orders of the Court where necessary to give effect to requests for assistance from any member state listed in the Schedule to the Law.
