Ministry of Justice, International Affairs Division

The Ministry of Justice prescribes the basic legislation applicable in daily life and also the basic judicial framework under which these rules are faithfully observed.

A request for Japan's assistance in criminal matters is processed in accordance with the Law for International Assistance in Investigation and Other Related Matters (Law No. 69 of 1980). Assistance is provided as a matter of international comity based on the principle of reciprocity.

When there is a mutual legal assistance treaty (MLAT) between the requesting country and Japan, assistance will be provided as a matter of legal obligation under the MLAT.
