Tommy Suharto cleared of graft

View & download:

The playboy son of Indonesia's former President Suharto has been cleared of corruption charges in a civil court.

Judges in Jakarta ruled that Hutomo Mandala Putra Suharto - better known as Tommy - was not guilty of stealing $400m (£275m) of state loans.

Tommy Suharto has faced the corruption courts more times than most, but has never been jailed as a result. This is the last outstanding case against him.

Anti-graft campaigners have reacted angrily to the verdict.

They have called on the government to appeal against the acquittal.

Unproven

Mr Suharto was accused of taking state loans to prop up his car import business during the Asian financial crisis 10 years ago - and not paying the loans back.

The judges said none of the charges against him had been proven, and so they cleared him.

The Suharto family has been accused of amassing perhaps tens of billions of dollars while the former president was in power, and there has been a lot of attention here on whether charges made against them will stick in court.

Anti-graft campaigners want the country's attorney general to continue pursuing the family under different laws.
