In the period from 2006-2007 the Asset Forfeiture Unit (AFU) initiated 252 cases, froze assets of over R1.25 billion, completed 242 cases and seized assets worth more than R100 million. The AFU won 27 out of 33 judgments on contested cases, with a success rate or 82%. A total of R19 million was put in the Criminal Assets Recovery Account and a little less than R74 million from that account went to crime fighting agencies, support centres for abused women and children and finding person identified as missing by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.
The Directorate of Special Operations initiated 368 new investigations and finalized 264. It finalized 214 prosecutions with a conviction rate of 85%, arrested 617 suspects and restrained assets worth about R1, 050 billion.
