In 1991 the Constitution created the General Prosecutor's Office, which was charged the direction of investigative justice.
It is directed by the Prosecutor General who is elected by the Supreme Court of Justice of a list of three candidates sent by the President.
On its own initiative or through a complaint, the General Prosecutor's Office investigates offences and processes indictments. The Judicial Police is under the Prosecutor General's office's control and direction.
This office can also practice searches and telephone interventions. There are several departments on account on their specialty and so, among others, there is an Anticorruption National Unit, Extinction of the Right of Property and Anti Money Laundering.
