This short video was taken during a workshop on "Implementing the Asset Recovery Provisions of the United Nations Convention against Corruption", hosted by the International Centre for Asset Recovery of the Basel Institute on Governance, in cooperation with the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) on 15-16 May 2007 in Basel, Switzerland. It was attended by 25 specialists in the area of asset recovery from around the world, and 30 observers.
At the plenary session "Case Study 2: The Innovative Case - Vladimiro Montesinos", Jean-Bernard Schmid, Juge d'instruction, République et Canton de Genève Pouvoir Judicaire Interventions, speaks on the importance of defining the notion of "victim" of an act of corruption for the purpose of repatriation of assets back to a corrupt government. He gives an example of a sofisticated solution to repatriation of assets in an asset recovery case involving US, Kazakhstan and Switzerland.
