Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI)

Every State has its own police force, each with powers to take up investigation relating to corruption. However, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is the principal anti-corruption agency in India. Since it is the NCB for INTERPOL in India, it has working arrangements with all State Police Headquarters and any reference from outside India, meant for any State Police, can be routed through the Ministry of Home Affairs or the CBI.

The CBI derives power to investigate from the Delhi Special Police Establishment Act, 1946. It has the following Divisions:

  1. Anti Corruption Division;
  2. Economic Offences Division;
  3. Special Crimes Division;
  4. Directorate of Prosecution;
  5. Administration Division;
  6. Policy & Coordination Division; and
  7. Central Forensic Science Laboratory.
