Australian Recovery

On 27 January 2003 after Hendra Rahardja's death, the Indonesian government dropped the criminal charges against Rahardja but indicated its desire to proceed with the civil aspects of Hendra Rahardja's case in order to recover the misappropriated funds. In return, the Australian government has conveyed its willingness to assist Indonesia

The next day the Australian government offered to settle the US 120 million of his assets there, and for that we need to have a liquidation team sort out the assets," Minister of Justice and Human Rights Yusril Ihza Mahendra said"

On 16 April 2003, the Indonesian government filed a petition with an Australian court last week to claim Rahardja's assets. However, progress was slow and by 2004 Indonesia had recovered only A$642,000 of Hendra's assets from Australia.

On 23 January 2008, the Indonesian Embassy in Ottawa issued a press release claiming that Indonesia had recovered USD 3 million in Australian as a result of pursuing Hendra Rahardja's assets.

Additionally, the Australian government has been acting as an intermediary between the Indonesian government and Hong Kong, where it is believed the rest of Rahardja's assets are stored.

See the Hong Kong Recovery case for more information about Indonesia's efforts to recovery Rahardja's assets in Hong Kong.
