The Attorney General's Office (Procuradoria Geral) is responsible for the defence of the legal order and of the democratic regime. It coordinates the investigative work of the Federal Police and assistance from the financial supervisory body.
Regional specialised courts were established in 2003 to prosecute money laundering and crimes against the national financial system.
The established specialised federal courts will enhance MLA efforts by specialising resources and attention to combating money laundering and similar crimes They will also allow the authorities to work in a more effective manner.
The department of Mutual Legal Assistance, which is part of the Attorney General´s Office, was created on February 3, 2005. Its most important activitie is to assist the A.G.'s Office and national organs in the topic of international legal assistance.
