The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) recovered last year Rp 554 billion (US$54.84 million) worth of state assets from several ministries and state owned companies, an official said Friday.

“During 2008 we regained the assets in the forms of official house and land,” KPK deputy chairman for prevention Haryono Umar told a conference.

The assets, he said, had been controlled by state officials of former state officials who were not entitled to the property.

KPK had asked all ministers and state institutions to submit their list of assets to make it easier for the anticorruption body to trace and recollect the state assets.

KPK director for wealth report M Sigit said the Religious Affairs Ministry returned Rp 179 billion worth of state assets, the Health Ministry Rp 44.4 billion, the National Education Ministry Rp 50 billion, the Foreign Affairs Ministry Rp 17.4 billion, the Directorate General of Tax Rp 58.6 billion, the State Logistics Agency Rp 12.8 billion and the state railway company PT KAI Rp 70 billion.
