Cases

There are two asset recovery investigations involving Gabon President Omar Bongo. The first case involved taking a ransom for the release of a jailed French businessman by the name of Rene Cardona, for which President Bongo was convicted by a French court and asked to pay back the money with interest.

The second investigation relates to allegations of Bongo's embezzlement of Gabon's public funds which were moved to bank accounts in France or used to purchase French luxury properties. Currently Transparency International is pursuing a claim to have French magistrates reopen investigations on Bongo and five other African leaders.
