Indonesia leader's relative in jail on corruption

An Indonesian court sentenced a relative of the country's president to four and half years in prison for corruption Wednesday.

Aulia Tantowi Pohan, a former deputy governor at Bank Indonesia, is the father-in-law of President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono's son. He and three other deputies were found guilty of illegally transferring approximately $9 million in bank funds to protect former colleagues implicated in a bailout scandal during the 1990s financial crisis.

The country's Corruption Court sentenced Pohan and Maman Somantri to four and half years in prison, while Bunbunan Hutapea and Aslim Tadjuddin were sentenced to four years.

Each also must pay a fine of 200 million rupiah (approximately $19,600).

Last year, bank Governor Burhanuddin Abdullah was sentenced to five years in prison in the case.

Two legislators and two bank officials also have been sentenced in the case.

Indonesia ranks as one of the world's most corrupt countries, and Yudhoyono's vows to crack down on graft helped him win elections in 2004. He faces another possible five-year term in July.
